In Cameroon, a mother’s life is nearly 100 times more at risk during childbirth than in Europe.

This devastating statistic, along with the millions affected by preventable diseases like malaria, represents a crisis that can be solved. Lack of access to basic healthcare, sanitation, and health education puts entire communities at risk, limits economic potential, and cuts lives tragically short. This is a fight for the future of families and communities. It’s a fight we are committed to winning.

How community health workers are saving lives

For pregnant women in the remote villages, the nearest clinic is a day’s journey away. This dangerous distance meant that most women gave birth at home without skilled care, and preventable complications often became tragedies. The threat of malaria was a constant fear, especially for young children. This is the reality the Wanlah Foundation is working to change.

Through our Healthcare Education and Prevention Program, we didn’t build a hospital; we brought healthcare to the people. We trained and equipped a team of local Community Health Workers right in this remote areas. These trusted individuals now go door-to-door, providing vital prenatal check-ups for expectant mothers, distributing mosquito nets to prevent malaria, and leading sensitization campaigns on sanitation and hygiene.

Today, nearly every pregnant woman in the village receives regular care, and child mortality from malaria has dropped significantly. By empowering local people with knowledge and resources, we are building a healthier, more resilient community from within.
