Environmental Conservation

Our Goal: To preserve and restore Cameroon’s precious natural habitats by empowering local communities to become the guardians of their own environment.

Between 2001 and 2023, Cameroon lost over 1 million hectares of tree cover.

This isn’t just a loss of trees; it’s a threat to the very foundation of life for communities across the country. Deforestation and illegal logging destroy the ecosystems that provide clean water, fertile soil for farming, and traditional livelihoods.

When our environment is at risk, so is our future. This is a challenge that requires urgent, community-led action to protect our shared home for generations to come.

"We are not just planting trees; we are planting hope for our children's future."

Goodwill, Community Reforestation Leader

Planting a forest, growing a future

The hillsides around the community of Kom used to be bare. Years of deforestation for firewood and illegal logging had left the land vulnerable to soil erosion, threatening the local water source and the farms below. “The rains would come and wash away the soil,” says Goodwill, a community elder. “We knew we were losing our land, but we didn’t know how to stop it.” This is a story of environmental loss that is all too common, but it is not irreversible.

Through our Natural Resource and Environmental Management Program, the Wanlah Foundation partnered with the leaders of Kom. We provided environmental education on the long-term dangers of deforestation and facilitated the creation of a community-led nursery. Together, we launched a community-based reforestation campaign, providing thousands of native tree seedlings.

Today, the hillsides are beginning to green again. The new trees are stabilizing the soil, protecting the water supply, and creating a more resilient ecosystem. More than that, the community has taken full ownership of the project, becoming passionate guardians of their environment. By promoting sustainable forestry practices, we are helping communities not just restore their land, but reclaim their future.
