Together, we fight to defend human rights and democracy

Many communities face violence, fear, and exclusion. When people know their rights and feel safe to speak up, change is possible. We work with communities and local leaders to build awareness, safety, and fair treatment for everyone.

Human rights affect daily safety and opportunity in Cameroon. In rural and conflict-affected areas, threats to freedom, safety, and fair treatment are common. Discrimination, arbitrary arrest, and limited civic space happen every day. Women and children are especially at risk, with little protection or voice. Many people have no support when their rights are violated. Wanlah Foundation works with communities and leaders to raise awareness, encourage peaceful solutions, and help people access justice and protection when they need it most.

THE CHALLENGE

The daily challenges and
pressures on people's rights

Communities in Cameroon face persistent threats to their human rights. Armed conflict in the Northwest, Southwest, and other regions causes violence and displacement, reducing safety and limiting freedom of expression. Discrimination, arbitrary arrest, and restrictions on peaceful assembly are common. Women and children face additional risks, including domestic violence and limited access to justice. These challenges hinder families’ access to education, essential services, and safety. When people cannot speak up or seek help safely, conflict and exclusion become entrenched in daily life.

Vulnerable groups affected

Women, children, widows, and marginalized groups face a higher risk due to distance, fear, and limited protection.

Lack of information

People lack clear information about their rights. Some face discrimination, abuse, or exclusion without knowing where to turn for help.

Broken trust

When rights are ignored, trust fades. Children leave school, women lose land or income, and conflict grows.

WHO THIS SUPPORTS

Communities and groups we walk with

Our work supports families in Cameroon who face real barriers to protection and fair treatment. This includes women, children, youth, people affected by conflict, and marginalised groups. We work with leaders, committees, schools, and local groups to build lasting community protection systems that people trust and use.

STORY FROM THE FIELD

A community finding
strength and safety

Bafut Village, Northwest Region

In this Communities, women and youth often felt afraid when disputes became threats. Some people had been detained without reason or silenced. Local leaders were unsure how to help without making things worse.

Wanlah Foundation joined with community leaders and groups to start safe, structured dialogues. Together, we held rights awareness sessions and trained local advocates to guide others and support peaceful conversations. Women, youth, and elders began using these spaces to share concerns without fear.

Over time, community members saw fewer conflicts turning into fear or harm. Local children could attend school more often because families felt safer with their neighbours. More people started seeking help early, before problems got worse.

“We found our voice and our way forward. Now we know we have rights and we can speak up safely.”
