As many as 2.9 million people in Cameroon are facing severe food insecurity.
Being hungry impacts everything. When families can’t cover this basic need, it’s harder to find a way out of poverty. Children who are hungry don’t do as well in school—if they are able to go at all. Livelihoods suffer, and the potential of an entire generation is put at risk.
In the village of Jakiri the land was growing tired. For families like Binla’s, this meant a constant struggle for food security. “We worked so hard,” Binla recalls, “but the earth was giving us less and less.”
Last year, the Wanlah Foundation partnered with the community in Jakiri to introduce our Sustainable Agriculture Program. Our coordinators worked with Binla and other local farmers, providing hands-on training in organic farming and agro-forestry techniques.
Today, Binla’s farm is thriving. Her harvest has more than doubled, providing more than enough food for her family. She and the other farmers have even formed a small cooperative to sell their surplus produce at a local market, creating a new source of income for the entire community. The dust is settling, and in its place, abundance is growing.
