In Cameroon, women’s labor force participation is only 57%, compared to 70% for men.

This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a barrier that holds back entire communities. When women are denied equal opportunities, families have less income, children have fewer resources, and the cycle of poverty deepens. This economic inequality also contributes to a higher risk of gender-based violence, threatening the safety and dignity of women and girls. This is a gap we are committed to closing.

More than a business: how one woman’s success is lifting her entire community

As a widow and a mother of four, Cresencia faced a future of uncertainty. Without a source of stable income, providing for her family was a daily struggle. “There were many days I did not know how we would manage,” she says. “Hope was something that felt very far away.”

Through our Gender and Community Development Program, the Wanlah Foundation partnered with Cresencia and other women in her village. We provided intensive entrepreneurship training, helping her develop a business plan to sell textiles, and supported her with a small start-up grant.

Today, Cresencia’s small stall has grown into a thriving shop that is a hub of the local market. She has not only created a secure future for her own family but has also hired two other women from her community. She has become a mentor, sharing the skills she learned to help other women start their own businesses. Her success proves that investing in one woman is an investment in an entire community’s prosperity.
