Environmental conservation is part of everyday life in rural Cameroon. It means caring for the land and water families rely on to farm, cook, stay healthy, and earn an income.

Healthy soil helps crops grow. Clean water supports homes and reduces sickness. Forests protect watersheds, provide shade, and support local livelihoods. Biodiversity also matters because it keeps nature in balance. 

When trees reduce and land is pushed too hard, farms produce less and water sources change. When watersheds are protected, families spend less time searching for water and farms handle dry weeks better.

STORY FROM THE FIELD

Restoring hope in
Bafut community

Bafut Village, Northwest Region 18 months ago

In Bafut Village, families had one clear goal: protect the stream that serves the village and keep farming productive. Over time, tree cover reduced around key areas. When heavy rains came, soil washed into low parts of the farms. During dry weeks, the stream dropped fast.

Wanlah Foundation worked with local leaders and a community group to agree on a simple plan. Together, we set up a community nursery, organized tree planting along the watershed, and conducted training sessions on sustainable farming practices. The community led the work and set rules that everyone could follow.

After 18 months, families reported clearer water, less erosion, stronger tree survival, and better farm moisture retention during dry periods.
